firstyearmusicteacher:

From middle school band. For being talking back to me and telling me no when I told him to go sit in the hall for a few minutes. So he ended up in the principals office.

I hope this doesn’t become a trend for my kids. :-/

Also: Any advice on getting middle school…

I’m no expert on classroom management, but it is the hardest thin to figure out your first year. I know I struggled. My best advice. Don’t make them be quiet the entire period. Have something built in, even during a music class where they can discuss something for even 60 seconds. Kids don’t have the attention span any of us that are teaching ever had. Especially middle school kids. I teach them. I promise I know. I will ask our band teacher what she does and try to get back with you.

Important Goal for this year: Sit and eat my lunch.

teachingtoday:

I know a lot of you do the “eat and work” thing, as I usually do. Try to force yourself to take the time to sit and enjoy your lunch. With or without co-workers. Just take the time to regroup, replenish, etc… Remember, there is no reward for being or looking the busiest. You will be more productive when you are slightly rested and refreshed. It’s amazing what 15-30 minutes of stillness can do for you.

I so wish my teammates saw this. They want to meet daily during lunch and discuss business. I need that time to regroup!!! Furthermore… I brought my daughter to my campus this year because we are needing to spend more time together and they said I would not be able to have lunch with her!!! So angry. I really need that time for us and myself.

He’s away

Well, honey is away at a convention. Miss him like crazy. Very proud of him. He was given an award that is very impressive for his line of work. He called me tonight and I was over joyed. I know to many of you, you r thinking… Wow he should call u all the time, but he’s far from typical. No he does not treat me badly at all. He has been hurt, but even before that he has always been kinda an odd duck. He is very private, very quiet. Even when he has feelings about something he doesn’t really talk about them. It’s just him. And I like him the way he is. Makes the little things he does so very important and noticeable. He is a man of action. Not words. Anyway, kinda just talked about his day for a few minutes and a synopsis of his plans for tomorrow and that was it. But he took time to call and that’s huge to me
Should he ever find this blog and read my posts I will be very embarrassed. It’s my outlet for my feelings. Just private thoughts any one can read but no one knows who I am. Let’s me tell everyone and no one. Any way. Done rambling for tonight. Night

What do new teachers need most in terms of support?

Mental, emotional, spiritual … Then comes peer support and help with all things education and classroom management.

Complete girl rant!!!

So my boyfriend has a friend. They were together the second time I ever saw my boyfriend. It had been a while since the first time we met and just happened to run into each other at a bar. He was having guys night. We were having girls night. I may have been a tad forward with him having had a bit to drink. I danced with this friend and my first impression of him was he was an arrogant goat roping bleepity bleep. This was a year ago. Well. More we hung out I was around this friend again and decided he wasn’t too bad. Then. Tonight I find out that this ‘friend’ of his said I had made advances at him also that night around a year ago. I am furious. Apparently he has planted doubt about me in my boyfriend’s mind this whole time with comments like that. I have NEVER been interested in this ass and it is all I can do to not go kickbox him in the head. I am so freaking ticked off. My boyfriend needs no help with doubt because of the way women have treated him in the past. This guy is a total lying bleepity bleep…
Vented. Still mad. What to do… Want to confront him but my boyfriend told me all this in confidence. Grrrrrrr

In many states teacher evaluations will now include the results of value-added assessments.

Meaning: Teachers will be judged in part by comparing students’ current test scores to those of the previous year. To what extent the teacher is responsible for the gains—or lack thereof—is debatable.

Our newly published reading program is research-based.

Meaning: Perhaps only one study supports the program’s methods, and that may be a study conducted by the author or publisher. Another possibility is that the program only superficially follows the methodology found effective by many studies.

.

We should be educating the “whole child.

Meaning: The writer disapproves of current educational reforms that minimize social, moral, physical, and imaginative learning in favor of a sole focus on academic learning.

All schools in America should be showing high student achievement.

Meaning: Achievement means only improved test scores, which could be the result of intensive test preparation, student sub-group manipulation, or cheating. Moreover, achievement and learning are not synonymous.

The new Common Core Standards are more rigorous than state standards.

Meaning: The CCSS are more difficult than those of most states, but not necessarily more appropriate for the designated grade levels or more in line with college or workplace expectations.

We are a “ no excuses ” school!

Meaning: The school has a strict set of rules and practices for teachers and students. Those who cannot or will not comply are asked to leave. The system is impractical for large public schools where total conformity cannot be enforced.

A team of experts has reviewed the new standards and found them appropriate for children of this age.

Meaning: The experts selected were college professors, think tank members, and private sector consultants who may never have taught children or spent any time observing in classrooms. Very likely, no practicing teachers were considered “expert” enough to be included in the team.

We need to reform our failing schools .

Meaning: A school’s principal and teachers are to blame for students’ low test scores. They need to be removed or the school should be closed.

States should closely monitor and limit the proliferation of for-profit schools.

Meaning: You can’t trust schools run by businesses.

The Department of Education has given many states NCLB waivers.

Meaning: The DOE has allowed some states to substitute their own plans for school improvement for the requirements of NCLB, as long as those plans are just as demanding or even more so.

I must comment on your definition of a ‘no excuses’ campus. I teach on a No Excuses University (NEU) campus. It is not a tyranny where if you are not on board you are out. The philosophy is one of Universal Achievement. Our mindset is one of all students can learn. We have proved that on our campus. Since adopting our mindset 5 years ago we have gone from an unacceptable campus to a recognized campus for the last three years. We have also closed the achievement gap between our students. All races are learning at a high level. We are an inner-city campus comprised of almost 90% high risk, low income students. We are a very ethically diverse campus. I completely believe the true No Excuses philosophy and highly recommend that everyone read Damon Lopez’ book or attend an NEU conference. And no, other than working on an NEU campus I am in no way an employee of NEU organization.

1. Listen First. The new-leader syndrome, however, often entails changing things quickly to establish authority. Many veteran leaders, on the other hand, may feel they already know what is best and may move forward without building consensus. In both cases, the “slow” part of going fast- listening- is cut out of the process and initiatives are short-lived.

The connected classroom

“The 21st century classroom does not just revolve around technology, it also encompasses learning styles, multiple intelligences, and classroom revolution.”

Sometimes I think some forget that technology does not stand alone.

Funny

I read all of these intelligent blogs. They blog about teaching and science and eating right and staying healthy. I like reading them. Enjoy the knowledge they have to impart and then all I can think about is how my heart feels right now and it seems to be all I want to blog about.
I’m crazy, madly in love with a man who has been trashed by other women. I have been trashed to by men, but seem to hold a completely different view. I refuse to let my past rule my future. I have given my heart away again to a gorgeous, kind man with true integrity. Unfortunately he is trying to hide the last two characteristics. Doesn’t help that his job also leaves him jaded and trusting no one. My wounds are older than his. I understand that. He is still so angry, pretty sure he could be the president of the she woman haters club. Funny thing is, his actions toward me are completely different. He’s sweet and kind and is almost always perfect in my eyes. (u all know love is blind, right?)
Any way, bared my soul and heart. He’s so afraid of any kind of caring that I just got no response. Just nothing. What the heck do I do? Pretend I didn’t? Ask him… Anything??? So confused.

world-shaker:

A cool little technique from Cool Cat Teacher. If you’re not already following her on Tumblr or her blog on Blogger, you should consider liking her Facebook page (where I found this gem).

I have colored poker chips in my classroom. There are 4 colors, so take those colors and line them up alternating all 4 colors and then write a number on one side for the total number of seats you have in your largest class (for me it is 22). Flip them over and write A,B,C,D,E on the other side while alternating colors. Let the students draw when you make cooperative groups instead of counting out numbers.

When you need to make groups, count how many students you have and remove chips higher than that number to give you groups of 4 by color. Use the numbers to make groups of 2 (1&2 go together, etc.). Or you can make larger groups using the A,B,C’s.

Plan ahead and this saves tons of time on groups. I use this all the time. It is adapted from Marzano’s classroom Management that works.

Really cool. Love that I have found so many educators blogging!!! This is awesome!
